It was an unpredictable night at the NBA draft but it was fun none the less, here are a few thoughts I have on the event.
– As much as you want to hate him, you have to love David Stern’s embrace of the fans booing him. First with him saying “Thank you for that Brooklyn welcome”, to his hand motion when the boos weren’t loud enough, and then Stern saying “We had to tell our international players that the boos are a sign of respect”. It was all capped off by a pretty awesome moment when Hakeem Olajuwon, who was the first player Stern got to announce as drafted, came out to send the commissioner off for his very last draft.
– The night of unexpectedness got started with the Cleveland Cavaliers drafting UNLV forward Anthony Bennett number 1. I feel the Cavs pulled a real “Cleveland” moment on this one. I like Bennett’s ability to score for how big he is, but Cleveland already has an upcoming star forward in Tristan Thompson! With the way the league is going maybe they plan on playing Thompson at the 5 spot, but he’s going to be a very small center.
– I love the Wizards pick of Otto Porter! Not only are the Wiz getting a great story, Porter came from a school of about 60 and didn’t play AAU ball, but a forward who can score from any point on the floor and is a great defender. Also Porter could eventually be this team’s leader, something I think the D.C. is tired of waiting for with John Wall. But the combo of Wall-Beal-Porter should have Washington fans, like me, excited.
– What in the world were the Philadelphia 76ers thinking? To trade Jrue Holiday for Nerlans Noel makes no sense to me. Holiday was an all-star last season and is one of the most explosive point guards in the league. I know with Noel you’re getting a shot blocking forward, but you are also getting possible questions with his ACL injury recovery. The Sixers are already dealing with the whole Andrew Bynum bum knee debacle. So I guess I could see this trade as insurance if Bynum doesn’t resign, but I don’t think it was worth Jrue Holiday.

– Can't do a draft recap without talking about the pending trade between the Nets and the Celtics. If this deal goes through and Brooklyn ends up with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Jason Terry, watch out for the Nets! Already with a dynamic backcourt of Deron Williams and Joe Johnson and an all-star center in Brook Lopez, this is all the Nets needed to finally get past the first round of the playoffs. This move is the one Brooklyn owner Mikhail Prokhorov has been trying to make since he bought the team, and he’s basically going all in on a possible championship. Also this should make Jason Kidd’s first year as a head coach pretty easy.
– How about Boston’s pick of Brazilian Lucas Nogueira, who was traded to Atlanta, and his hair! His afro is so huge that his draft hat on top of it, looked like one of those small plastic baseball caps you’d get out of a vending machine.

- Welcome to the NBA Giannis Adetokundo! You officially have the hardest name in the league to pronounce and will probably be called G.A. by your Milwaukee teammates. I had a feeling when Stern was trying to pronounce his name he probably just wanted to say “Screw it the Bucks draft some guy from Greece”.
- How about the picks that were sitting in the Barclays Center’s stands, like Mason Plumlee?! When they were drafted and making their way to the stage it had a very Price Is Right “Come on down you are playing in the NBA!” feel.
– Good to see Erick Green get drafted and then traded to a team that likes to run up-and-down the court in the Denver Nuggets; he could be the steal of the draft. Also while VCU’s Troy Daniels didn’t get picked he was signed by the Charlotte Bobcats as an undrafted free agent. With a roster full of holes he’s going to get a good shot at making the team..
– Also I heard Mark Sanchez tried to send Tim Hardaway Jr. a welcome to New York text, but he fumbled his phone, hi-oh!
